’Everything is possible with great determination’

„The most valuable tool I have learnt at BME is how to research and understand complex problems.” Interview with Omar Taha, mechanical engineer alumni of BME.

Where were you born?

I was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but I am from Sudan.

Why did you choose BME to study mechanical engineering?

Growing up, I used to visit Hungary regularly with my family because my father studied in Szeged. My brother, who is two years older than me, was already studying Electrical Engineering at BME. I chose Mechanical Engineering because I am an aircraft enthusiast, and I am fascinated by gas turbines and rotating equipment and enjoy learning more about them.

What kind of difficulties did you face during your studies?

The first year was the most challenging, and although my courses were in English, I struggled with the language barrier outside of the university.

Another difficulty was the workload. The courses were very demanding and required a lot of time and effort to complete. However, with the help and support of the university’s professors who were always available throughout my studies, as well as the hard work and dedication, I was able to overcome these challenges and succeed in my studies..

How would you describe Budapest as a student city?

Budapest is a great city for students. it is home to many prestigious universities in Europe and has a lively nightlife. I spent one of my best years in Budapest and still miss it to this day.

What kind of further plans do you have in your profession?

I am currently focusing on expanding my knowledge in the oil & gas pumps and gaining more practical experience. However, I plan to pursue a PhD path in the near future.

What did BME give to you?

It is difficult to summarize a short answer. Apart from the excellent technical knowledge, BME taught me how to handle difficult and complex problems. I still remember an important sentence from the graduation speech given by one of the university’s members which was ’this is only the beginning, and you must continue your learning journey’. The most valuable tool I have learnt is how to research and understand complex problems and everything is possible with great determination.
